This month’s spotlight is Silvia do Valle from Orlando, Florida! Silvia recently received an Active Fund grant for horseback riding equipment.

Horseback riding has different equipment adaptations that Silvia is able to utilize, such as an adaptable saddle and a custom pair of riding boots to fit her different calf sizes. This recent grant is specifically for double bridle reins with loops. “This specialized rein system allows Silvia to maintain a better grip and a more stable, functional contact with the horse,” her trainer explains.

Silvia is a veterinarian and has always identified as an active equestrian, fascinated by horses and a fan of showjumping since a young age. She started riding competitively at age 15 “and have not stopped riding and jumping since,” she says. “I wake up ready to go ride and fall asleep dreaming of horses.

Silvia’s passion was in equestrian show jumping. Without that outlet, “life made no sense,” she said. “Luckily paraequestrian dressage is very possible for my condition, and it is a Paralympic sport.”

Injured on a horse, getting back on horseback has helped overcome her PTSD. “My horse is the best physical and mental health therapist!” she jokes. Despite setback after setback, Silvia is determined to compete in the World Equestrian Games. “I always work hard for my goals, and there is always another goal once one is achieved,” she says.

For Silvia, horseback riding means everything. “Once I became disabled and could barely walk, the horses are now my mobility. I feel free again, as if I could dance and run again.”
