KBF Spring 2021 Active Fund is Open!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Kelly Brush Foundation Accepting Spring 2021 Active Fund Grant Applications

Deadline for grant applications is March 31, 2021

BURLINGTON, VT (Feb 2, 2021) – The Kelly Brush Foundation (KBF) is currently accepting applications for Spring 2021 Active Fund adaptive sports equipment grants. The deadline to submit an application is March 31, 2021. The Kelly Brush Foundation’s Active Fund is an application-based grant program to help people with spinal cord injuries purchase adaptive sports equipment.

Participation in sports and recreation is truly life changing after a spinal cord injury, however adaptive sports equipment is prohibitively expensive and many people cannot afford to purchase their own equipment. Owning adaptive sports equipment gives people the opportunity to spend quality time with friends and family, increases independence, and improves mental and physical health. Many people use sports and recreation as a way to form and strengthen social bonds, and those bonds become more important than ever following a spinal cord injury.

To date the Kelly Brush Foundation has awarded 1,064 adaptive sports equipment grants to people who are paralyzed, spanning 48 states. The current average grant size is $3,500 per person. The most commonly requested pieces of equipment are handcycles (both road and offroad), basketball chairs, monoskis, all-terrain chairs, racing chairs, rugby chairs, tennis chairs, and WCMX chairs.

“We want to help people along the path from injury to independence”, said Executive Director Edie Perkins. “We believe that participation in sports and recreation is a crucial step in helping people thrive after a spinal cord injury. The Active Fund exists to help remove the financial barriers that people face when trying to purchase adaptive sports equipment.”

Anyone living in the United States with a spinal cord injury is eligible to apply for an Active Fund grant. The full guidelines and online application can be found at: https://kbf.org/theactivefund/
